The following information outlines CTA fares. Pay CTA fares with Chicago Card, Chicago Card Plus, Transit Cards, or 30-Day, 7-Day or Visitor Passes, or cash. Purchase CTA fare media at more than 700 sales outlets throughout the Chicagoland area and at 144 rail stations.

Full Fares
The full fare (bus and rail) is determined by the type of payment you use:

Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus: Full fare is $1.75; transfer for 25 cents. Transfers allow two additional rides within two hours after the first boarding.

Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus offer lower fares, quicker boarding, protected fares and a guaranteed bonus. Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus customers get a $2.00 bonus for each $20 of value added.

Transit Card: $1.75 on buses; $2.00 at rail stations; transfer for 25 cents. Transfers allow two additional rides within two hours after the first boarding.

Cash: $2 per ride on bus and rail; exact fare only; no change returned. No transfers issued when paying with cash.

The Reduced Fare (bus and rail) is determined by the type of payment you use:

Cash Reduced Fare: $1 per ride on bus; 85 cents on rail*, exact fare only. No transfers issued when paying with cash. *Cash not accepted at rail station turnstiles. See rail station Customer Assistant and add 85 cents value at the fare vending machine.

Reduced fare Transit Card: 85 cents on buses and at rail stations. Transfer for 15 cents. Transfers allow two additional rides within two hours after the first boarding.

Chicago Card® and Chicago Card Plus® are a new generation of fare cards that are accepted for full-fare payment on all CTA rail and bus routes and Pace buses. Valid only on Pace routes with automated fare collection equipment). These durable plastic cards offer many benefits not found in traditional fare cards.

Chicago Card uses a stored-value system that allows fare value to be added to a card by inserting cash into any CTA vending machine.

  • One ride: $1.75 (bus and rail)
  • First transfer use in two hours: 25 cents
  • Second transfer use in two hours: Free
Chicago Card provides the following benefits:
  • Lower Fares - Chicago Card customers pay $1.75 full fare and 25 cents transfer. Customers who pay with cash or use Transit Cards at rail stations pay $2.00 full fare. Transfers are not available when paying cash.
  • Fare Bonus - All Chicago Cards earn a $2 bonus for every $20 of added value. Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus are the only fare payment options that provide this bonus.
  • Quicker Boarding - To board a bus or enter through a rail station turnstile, simply touch your Chicago Card to the touchpad on the front of rail station turnstiles and bus fareboxes on all CTA routes and Pace buses. The appropriate fare (full fare or transfer) is deducted from your card each time it is used.
  • Protected Fares - By registering your Chicago Card you can protect its value against theft, loss or damage. Simply go online or call the CTA to report the problem. A replacement card will be issued and the balance on the card at the time the CTA was notified of the theft or loss will be available to the cardholder. Replacement cards cost $5. Registration is free, easy and well worth the few seconds it takes.
  • Adding Value - You can add value at all 144 rail station vending machines and 60+ Touch-n-Go locations throughout Chicagoland. Click here to see these Touch-n-Go locations.
Chicago Card Plus uses an online account-based system in which you can manage your card to best suit your transit needs.
  • One ride: $1.75 (bus and rail)
  • First transfer use in two hours: 25 cents
  • Second transfer use in two hours: Free
Chicago Card Plus provides the following benefits:
  • Multiple Fare Choices - Choose between Pay-Per-Use fare payment, where full fares and transfers are deducted from your online account each time you ride, or 30-Day Passes, which provide unlimited rides for 30 consecutive days beginning with the first ride taken using your Chicago Card Plus.
  • Lower Fares - Chicago Card Plus Pay-Per-Use customers pay $1.75 full fare and 25 cents transfer. Customers who pay with cash or use Transit Cards at rail stations pay $2.00 full fare. Transfers are not available when paying cash.
  • Fare Bonus - Pay-Per-Use customers will earn a $2 bonus for every $20 of added value. Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus are the only fare payment options that provide this bonus.
  • Online Reloading - Your credit or debit card will be charged each time your account balance reaches its reloading threshold: Pay-Per-Use customers will have their accounts automatically reloaded with their pre-selected reload amount each time their account value falls to $10; 30-Day Pass customers will have their accounts reloaded with a new 30-Day Pass on the 27th day of each 30-day cycle (the new pass-cycle will not begin until the first ride is taken following completion of the current 30-day cycle).
  • Quicker Boarding - To board a bus or enter through a rail station turnstile, simply touch your Chicago Card Plus to the touchpad on the front of rail station turnstiles and bus fareboxes on all CTA and Pace buses.
  • Protected Fares - If a Chicago Card Plus is lost, stolen or damaged, simply go online or call the CTA to report the problem. A replacement card will be issued and the balance in the account at the time the CTA was notified of the theft or loss will be available to the cardholder. Replacement cards cost $5.
  • Account Management - Fare transactions can be viewed for each card in an account, and personal information can be changed by visiting www.chicago-card.com or by calling CTA Customer Service at 1-888-YOUR-CTA (1-888-968-7282), Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
There are five ways to order a Chicago Card or Chicago Card Plus:
  1. Online: www.chicago-card.com.
  2. Phone: 1-888-YOUR-CTA (1-888-968-7282).
  3. Mail: Use the order form inside the Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus sales brochure found at CTA rail stations and on CTA buses.
  4. In Person: CTA Sales Center, 567 W. Lake Street, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  5. Chicago Card is also available at more than 200 locations, including select Jewel, Dominick's and Currency Exchanges.

Until further notice by the CTA, effective January 1, 2008, the $5 purchase fee for Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus is waived for first-time users who register their cards. A $5 fee will be charged to customers who elect not to register their cards and for replacement cards.

Buses and turnstiles deduct full fares and transfer charges from Transit Cards as shown.
  • One ride: $1.75 (bus); $2.00 (rail)

After the free ride, an additional ride costs $1.75 and a new two-hour period begins.

The following pre-valued Transit Cards are sold at currency exchanges, Jewel and Dominick's stores, and at many other locations.

  • $10 Transit Card
  • $20 Transit Card

Transit Cards can be purchased and value can be added to Transit Cards at vending machines located at all CTA rail stations. Vending machines accept one, two, five, ten, and twenty-dollar bills, and all coins except pennies and half dollars. A new Transit Card can be purchased for a minimum of $1.75. Any value can be added to an existing Transit Card as long as total value does not exceed $100. Up to 7 full fare individuals can use one Transit Card with transfer eligibility maintained for each individual. Each inserts the card separately into the turnstile* or farebox.

* Turnstiles do not accept cash. Reduced fare customers should obtain a Reduced Fare Transit Card from the Customer Assistant and add 85 cents value at the fare vending machine.

As of January 1, 2008, Reduced Fare Transit Cards are now sold in 2-card packs ($8.50 value per card) instead of 20-card packs. The package of two Reduced Fare Transit Cards is sold for $15.30.

Unlimited ride passes offer the best value for CTA riders. Full-fare passes are available in 1-day, 7-day and 30-day versions. These passes cannot be shared or recharged.

The 30-day pass costs $75 (only $2.50 per day) and allows unlimited rides for one person on CTA and most Pace routes for 30 days from first use. They are activated the first time they are used at a train station or on a bus.

7-day passes cost $20 (less than $3 per day) and allow unlimited rides on CTA buses and trains.

The CTA Reduced Fare 30-Day Pass is sold for $35 to eligible reduced fare riders. It is valid for unlimited riding on CTA and most Pace routes for 1 person. It is also activated on the first use.

The Full Fare Link-Up Pass is only available to Metra monthly ticket holders. The pass is good for commuting on CTA weekdays 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

U-Pass provides university students with unlimited CTA rides at all times. It is sold to students by participating schools and is valid for one academic term. Click here to learn more about U-Pass.

Your pass activates the first time you use it and is good for the number of consecutive days shown on the front of the pass. CTA's Visitor Passes make getting to Chicago's top attractions quick, easy and more affordable than cab rides or parking fees.

    Note: CTA Visitor Passes are not valid on Metra (commuter railroad) trains. Visitor Passes cannot be shared or recharged.

  • Your Best Travel Value: Visitor Passes offer you the most economical travel value. With unlimited rides, the more you ride, the more you save!

    Note: For multiple rides on CTA, Visitor Passes are a great option for kids, too. The regular cash fare for kids ages 7-11 is $1. Children under age 7 ride free.

  • Easy to Use: Your pass activates the first time you use it. Just dip your pass into the bus farecard machine or the train station turnstile---and go! The pass is good for the number of consecutive days shown on the front of the card. As an example, a 3-day pass is valid for 72 hours from the time of first use and the expiration date and time is printed on the back of the card after it is used.

  • CTA is at Your Service: Whether you're planning a conference or convention, visiting Chicago with friends or by yourself, the CTA is at your service.

    We will provide you with connections, directions and customized group itineraries and send you complimentary maps and brochures.

    Just call 1-888-YOUR-CTA (1-888-968-7282) and you will be connected to a transit specialist, who will arrange an advanced purchase of your passes and will help you plan your trip on the CTA.

    Travel Tip: For groups of 15 or more, call us prior to your trip, so we can be sure to accommodate all of your group's transit needs.

  • Easy to Buy: Enjoy the convenience of ordering Visitor Passes in advance online.

    To order passes online, just click on "CTA Store" at the bottom of this section. On the CTA Store page, click on "Transit Cards," and then click on "Go to order form." Order today, and you will receive your Visitor Passes within 10 business days. All major credit cards are accepted, and there's no charge for shipping. All sales are final.

    You can also buy your pass the day you need it. Visitor Passes are sold at many local outlets, including O'Hare and Midway CTA stations, Visitor Information Centers and downtown Jewel food stores. Just call 1-888-YOUR-CTA for sales outlets and locations.

    Travel tip: Sales Outlets only carry a limited number of Visitor Passes. When possible, especially for large groups, please order Visitor Passes in advance.

Reduced Fare and Student Riding Permits

CTA offers a range of reduced fares for use by:

  • Children ages 7-11.
  • Grade school and high school students with CTA Student Riding Permit.
  • Riders with disabilities with a valid RTA Reduced Fare Permit. All Medicare cardholders are eligible to apply for the RTA Reduced Fare Program.
As of March 17, 2008, seniors age 65 and over (living in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties) are eligible to ride free on CTA, Pace and Metra fixed routes with a valid RTA Reduced Fare Riding Permit.

Getting Reduced Fare Permits

  • Riders with disabilities
    • Call 312-913-3110 to apply for the RTA Reduced Fare Permit. All Medicare cardholders are eligible to apply for the RTA Reduced Fare Permit.
    • Reduced Fare Permit allows the permit holder and an attendant to each ride at the reduced fare.
    • Reduced Fare Permit entitles the holder to travel at reduced fares on Pace and Metra.

    Value can be added to Reduced Fare Permits at vending machines located at CTA rail stations. Vending machines accept one, two, five, ten, and twenty-dollar bills, and all coins except pennies and half dollars. Maximum value on card can not exceed $100.

  • Most Reduced Fare Permits are for the use of one person only.
  • A Reduced Fare Permit allows one reduced fare for the Permit holder and one reduced fare for an attendant accompanying the Permit holder to be paid using the Permit with transfer eligibility maintained for both individuals.
  • Reduced Fare Permit entitles the holder to travel at reduced fares on Pace and Metra.

Getting Student Riding Permits

  • Grade and High School Students 12 and over
    • Purchase the Student Riding Permit through school or call 312-932-2923 for an application.
      Regular school year - $5
      Summer session - $2
    • Student Riding Permits are valid weekdays between 5:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. when school is in session. Contact 1-888-YOUR-CTA for more information.
